Once the joints are cut out and thoroughly cleaned, the joints should be flushed out with clean water. Where there is evidence of stone pinning’s (small stone chips), these should be left intact where possible, defective pinning’s will be replaced. Without pinning’s you would have overly large joints, which may result in shrinkage. Pinning’s also help support weak areas of masonry.
The re-pointing process has three main stages. The first, raking out; involves cleaning out old mortar, plant life etc. The second stage is filling in, pressing the lime mortar back into the joints, finishing slightly proud of stonework. The third stage is allowing the mortar to gain a set and then brushing back to the required depth and finish.
