Lime Pointing

Before carrying out re-pointing work in Edinburgh or Scotland, determine the type of mortars used in the original building phase. Carefully survey the wall to determine the pointing style and condition of the mortar.

The replacement of decayed or unsuitable mortar joints (in overly hard cement based mortars) is a necessary part of the long term maintenance of a building. The use of to hard a mortar both for bedding and pointing can have an adverse effect on stone. If the mortar is too dense and strong, soluble salts are unable to evaporate through the joints, and instead become concentrated in the stone and either cause or accelerate decay.

Considerable care must be taken when removing decayed mortar from historic masonry. The removal of cement based mortars will require greater care if damage to the adjacent area is to be avoided. As a general rule joints are cut out to a depth of twice the height of the joint.

Once the joints are cut out and thoroughly cleaned, the joints should be flushed out with clean water. Where there is evidence of stone pinning’s (small stone chips), these should be left intact where possible, defective pinning’s will be replaced. Without pinning’s you would have overly large joints, which may result in shrinkage. Pinning’s also help support weak areas of masonry.

The re-pointing process has three main stages. The first, raking out; involves cleaning out old mortar, plant life etc. The second stage is filling in, pressing the lime mortar back into the joints, finishing slightly proud of stonework. The third stage is allowing the mortar to gain a set and then brushing back to the required depth and finish.
