Craigleith Masonry
Conservation, Repair & Maintenance of Historic Buildings.
Preserving our finest buildings for future generations.

    Examples of use:
  • Where ashler masonry or very finely jointed masonry has had considerable damage to the arises, flush finish in lithomex with a false struck joint is the ideal solution.
  • Can be used to form decorative stone or brick features such as mouldings and cornices.
  • Can be used for repairs prior to the application of lime washes/paints. Lithomex will readily accept washes and paints.
  • Can be accurately colour matched, having characteristics similar to the host masonry, i.e. bond strength, elasticity, vapour permeable and durability.

Lithomex Stone Repair and Restoration Mortar

Lithomex is a specially formulated mortar based on natural hydraulic lime and aggregates and can be used for the repair of  traditional stone buildings to form decorative features such as mouldings and cornices, where without repair would result in undue weathering of surrounding masonry, leading to accelerated  decay of otherwise sound elements. In addition, they offer a significant advantage over wholesale masonry replacement.

Much of the masonry replaced in the last 30 years or so has resulted in partial or complete removal of predominantly structurally sound masonry that has suffered from little more than face weathering, often through neglect and lack of maintenance of basic building details such as gutters and down pipes.

Problems also arise when the building has been ''repaired'' with inappropriate materials through lack of knowledge. Using cement based mortars and plasters in traditional buildings runs the risk of locking the moisture into the walls which could result in dampness internally and timber decay in timbers built into the walls.

Our leading stone restorer David McPherson also provides tutoring at the SLCT for stone restoration works. In conjunction with Masons Mortar and SLCT we have over the last few years been involved in promoting Lithomex lime mortar repairs as a less invasive approach to stone restoration.
